A&E Home Video, the company that brought you the NASCAR Driven to Win DVD’s, is now releasing a two-disc set on the 50th anniversary of the Daytona 500. See below for the press release or check out the website. All I know is that it is 288 minutes of Daytona. That’s almost as long as a race at Pocono! Even better, they have provided me with a copy to give away. I have an idea for a contest, but I wanted some feedback first. If you have a fun idea for a contest, let me know in the comments. NE

I'm becoming more and more averse to the term architecture and architect in terms of creating software, partially because it is such an overloaded term that seems to cause so much continual opining about its meaning but, more importantly, because I don't think it is like what we do, at least not to the extent that seems to be commonly thought. We are not building houses (or bridges, or skyscrapers, or cities).  Houses, and other physical constructions, rely on pretty much immutable laws of

Web-based instant message services — whether AIM, MSN, Yahoo or Gtalk — are some of the most popular forms of online communication. There are a couple startups that have taken advantage of this; most people in Silicon Valley will know locally-based startup Meebo, which lets you chat with friends across any of these networks. But Meebo has a European rival, Amsterdam-based eBuddy, that may be less familiar. That’s about to change: eBuddy is opening up an office in San Francisco, it’s already ma

The Web has changed drastically since it started as a collection of physics papers in 1991. The first two years, it was a small type-only hypertext system used by a bunch of researchers, but in 1993 the first major GUI to the Web was introduced with the Mosaic browser. Our research into users' interaction with Web sites and intranets has continued as the Web has evolved through generations of technologyfrom the gray pages in Mosaic through the colorful pages with table-based layout in Netscape t

My MIX 08 Recap Category: Development | Web 9 Mar 2008 Well, I just got back yesterday from my first MIX experience and wanted to write up a recap of the event.  Everyone likely came to MIX from a slightly different place, with slightly different expectations, and left with there own feelings on the event.  For me, it was a good overall event.  It really comes down to 3 things for me.  People, Passion, and Content. I came to MIX knowing almost no one there.  I can honestly say I saw only

This past weekend I met Tristan Harris, a Stanford dropout to talk about his start-up, Apture that has developed a cool new way to add rich media experience to web content in a simple and easy to use manner. Founded in July 2007, the San Mateo, Calif-based company was started by Harris and three others, and has remained in stealth since, but is now announcing the beta availability of its technology that has been adopted by Washington Post for its website and some of its blogs. So how does it

When we let users loose to go anywhere they wanted on the Web, they went to a search engine 88 percent of the time. Only in 12 percent of cases did they go straight to a Web site that they hoped would help them with their problem. For example, when the task was to research vacation travel to Mexico, only a few users went to a travel site that they already knew and trusted, such as Expedia or Travelocity. The vast majority employed a search engine to help them find sites. The fact that search en

In the beginning, the question was whether people were even capable of using Web sites. Today the answer is "yes," at least most of the time. When we told people to go to a specific site in the user testing for this book, they completed their tasks successfully 66 percent of the time. Of course, they also failed 34 percent of the time, but on average people did succeed. There are more than a billion users on the Internet, so any site that has less than ten million customers (in other words,

For all of you in the Ohio area, I’ll be speaking at the Day of .NET on April 19th.  My topic will be “User Interface Design for Programmers.”  I will explain the basics of usability, information architecture, user experience, etc.  It will be focused on explaining the concepts to people who aren’t and don’t think like designers.  I’ll make the materials publicly available after the talk. As an aside, MS is doing good stuff listening to standards developers.  They are no longer “evil” in the s

At Information Today’s Buying & Selling eContent 2008 event, Y.S. Chi, Vice-Chair, Elsevier gave a great analogy about the different levels of content available to users.  He compared content to baseball.  You can watch a ball game from the bleachers, from box seats, from a private suite with pop-up screens and access to stats, video clips, etc., or from your TV at home.  It’s the same content, the ball game, but the user experience is different.  I love this example.  Chi also listed 8 way

We have just uploaded some changes to the MIX essentials agenda, as everything is now getting confirmed. In addition to the sessions that were already online when I first wrote on this event, new ones have been confirmed.
